Ms. Sarah, our Speech Teacher, and I attended a great conference about Core Vocabulary on January 18th. During this day-long conference we learned about why we are piloting this communication system in room 105, why the program is successful, and ways that we can incorporate the program into what we do every day.
Each week we are doing a number of activities with our word of the week. Last week we worked on the word “I”. We introduced the word, found it on our board (both the big one at the front of the room and the small one on each desk), read some books that used “I” frequently, and did an art project with the word “I.” This week we have introduced like. Our writing prompt for the week combined “I” and “like” and colors to determine what our favorite colors are. We also read some books that featured “I” and “like,” as well as did an art project with the word.
Each week we will introduce a new word and pair it with our past words. We also practice using the words on our boards as we do individual work, group work, and small group work. More information will appear here and in your student’s folder as we continue working with this great new system.
